Nordic Trading Dictionary
100+ terms every Nordic equity trader should know. Defined with market context — not just textbook definitions.
A
Accumulation
Wyckoff phase where institutions quietly build positions. Price moves sideways. Volume rises on up days. On Oslo energy stocks like Equinor, accumulation ranges can last months during oil cycle troughs.
ADR
American Depositary Receipt. A US-listed certificate representing foreign shares. Many Nordic companies have ADRs trading in New York. Liquidity is often higher on the home exchange (e.g., Novo Nordisk on Copenhagen vs its ADR).
ARM
The Autonomous Risk Manager in NordTraders. Reviews every signal against pre-trade gate rules — R:R minimums, capital limits, conviction thresholds — and rejects setups that fail.
Alpha
Excess return above a benchmark. A Nordic portfolio generating 12% when OMXS30 returns 8% has 4% alpha. Most retail traders chase beta thinking it's alpha. A scanner that says "no" preserves alpha.
Ask
The lowest price a seller will accept. The other half of the bid-ask spread. On liquid Nordic names like Novo Nordisk or Volvo, the spread is tight. On First North names, it can be several percent wide.
ATR
Average True Range. A volatility measure showing the average price range over N periods. Use 14-period ATR for stop placement — wider ATRs demand wider stops. Nordic energy names have structurally higher ATRs than Nordic banks.
B
Baltic Dry Index
A shipping index tracking bulk carrier rates. Directly relevant to Maersk (Danish) and Norwegian shipping stocks. Rising Baltic Dry = higher freight rates = shipping sector tailwind.
Bid-Ask Spread
The difference between the highest price a buyer will pay and the lowest a seller will accept. Wider on small Nordic names. Trade large caps during the first two hours for tightest spreads.
Bollinger Bands
A volatility indicator: middle band is 20-period SMA, outer bands are 2 standard deviations. Nordic large caps tend to respect the bands. Widen to 2.5 on small-cap names.
Breakout
Price moves above a defined resistance level. Darvas boxes wait for the breakout before entry. Nordic industrials on OMXS30 produce cleaner breakouts than US names because of lower algorithmic noise.
Basis Point
One hundredth of a percent (0.01%). Rate changes are measured in basis points. A Riksbank 25bp cut moves SEK. A 50bp surprise from Norges Bank can swing Norwegian bank stocks 3-5% intraday.
Bear Market
A sustained decline of 20%+ from recent highs. In Nordic markets, bear phases often coincide with weak oil (Norway), weak industrials (Sweden), or krone crises. Your scan should tighten during bear markets — fewer setups, smaller size.
Bull Market
A sustained advance of 20%+ from recent lows. Nordic bull markets are often export-driven: strong global PMI lifts Swedish industrials, high oil lifts Norwegian equities. Trend-following strategies work best here.
C
CET
Central European Time. All Nordic exchanges — Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo — operate on CET/CEST. No timezone fragmentation. Best liquidity 09:00-11:00 CET, overlapping with London.
Closing Auction
The final 5 minutes of the trading day. Orders are matched at a single clearing price. Avoid market orders during this window — spreads can widen significantly on Nordic names.
Composite Operator
Wyckoff term for the hypothetical entity representing all smart money. The Composite Operator accumulates at wholesale prices and distributes at retail prices. Your job: follow, do not fight.
Consolidation
Price moves sideways within a narrow range after a trend. Darvas boxes form during consolidation. The longer the consolidation, the stronger the potential breakout.
Copenhagen
Home of Nasdaq Copenhagen and the OMXC25 index. Dominated by healthcare: Novo Nordisk alone is ~40% of the benchmark. Constitution Day (June 5) is a half-day — liquidity drops after midday.
CFD
Contract for Difference. A derivative that tracks an underlying asset price. Popular in Sweden and Denmark. CFDs offer leverage but carry overnight financing costs. NordTraders does not recommend leverage for new traders.
Correlation
How two assets move relative to each other. Five Nordic bank longs are NOT five independent bets — they correlate. Cap sector, theme, and country exposure. The 1% risk rule applies to groups, not individual trades.
Council
NordTraders's four-master system: Livermore (pivotal points), Darvas (boxes), Seykota (trend following), Wyckoff (smart money). A trade must pass at least two council votes. Disagreement is information — it signals an unclear setup.
CPI
Consumer Price Index. Monthly inflation gauge. Swedish CPIF, Danish CPI, Norwegian CPI-ATE all move their respective central banks. Nordic bond yields and currency pairs react sharply to CPI surprises.
Cup and Handle
A bullish continuation pattern: price forms a rounded bottom (the cup), then a small downward drift (the handle). Breakout above the handle triggers entry. Works on monthly charts of Nordic compounders like Atlas Copco.
D
Darvas Box
Nicolas Darvas's breakout strategy: wait for a new high, then consolidation in a tight range (the box), then buy the breakout above the box ceiling on rising volume. Stops go below the box floor. Works well on Nordic industrials.
Distribution
Wyckoff phase where smart money sells into strength. Price moves sideways, volume rises on down days. The fourth phase before markdown. Spotting distribution early saves capital.
DKK
Danish Krone. Pegged to the Euro at approximately 7.46 DKK per EUR. Danish equities are currency-neutral for EUR-based investors but move against USD when the dollar strengthens.
Drawdown
The peak-to-trough decline in an account. A 20% drawdown requires a 25% gain to recover. Track your maximum drawdown weekly. If it exceeds your system's historical range, the system may be broken — or you're not following it.
Dividend Yield
Annual dividend divided by share price. Nordic banks yield 4-7% typically. Novo Nordisk yields ~1% but grows dividends 15%+/year. Yield alone tells you nothing — check payout ratio and growth rate.
E
Entry
The price level where a trade setup triggers. On every NordTraders card, the entry is pre-calculated based on the structure. Do not chase — wait for price to come to your level.
Equinor
Norway's largest company. Oil and gas major listed on Oslo Børs (EQNR.OL). The single largest weight in OSEBX. Moves with Brent crude and EU gas storage levels.
EMA
Exponential Moving Average. Weights recent prices more heavily than the SMA. 20-period EMA for short-term trend, 50 EMA for intermediate. Nordic large caps respect the 50 EMA on daily charts more reliably than most markets.
EPS
Earnings Per Share. Net income divided by shares outstanding. The fundamental engine behind stock prices over the long term. Track EPS revisions on Nordic holdings — downward revisions often precede price declines by weeks.
ETF
Exchange-Traded Fund. A basket of securities trading like a stock. XACT OMXS30 tracks the Swedish index. iShares MSCI Nordic ETF provides broad Nordic exposure. ETFs offer instant diversification but dilute individual stock returns.
EUR
Euro. Finland uses EUR, Denmark pegs DKK to EUR. Finnish stocks are currency-neutral for eurozone investors. For USD-based traders, EURNOK and EURSEK pairs add a second layer of risk to Nordic positions.
F
First North
Nasdaq's Nordic growth market. Lighter listing requirements than the Main Market. Companies often graduate to the Main Market. Higher risk, lower liquidity. Treat First North names differently — smaller size, limit orders only.
Full Report
NordTraders's trade brief: entry, stop, target, R:R, confidence level, structure analysis, and TradingView chart. Appears only when a setup passes the council vote and pre-trade gate.
Fibonacci
A technical tool using ratios (38.2%, 50%, 61.8%) to identify retracement targets. Draw from swing low to swing high. Nordic industrials often find support at the 61.8% retracement during pullbacks. Combine with volume confirmation.
Fill
The price at which your order executes. On liquid Nordic names, fills are close to your limit. On small caps, expect slippage. If you're getting bad fills repeatedly, trade larger names — the problem is liquidity, not your broker.
Float
Shares available for public trading. Small floats on Nordic names amplify moves — a modest buy order can gap price 3%. Always check free float before sizing a position. First North names often have floats under 30%.
Fundamental Analysis
Evaluating a company's financial health: revenue, earnings, debt, margins. Nordic companies report quarterly. Combine fundamentals with technical timing — good company, wrong entry is still a losing trade.
G
Gate
Pre-trade gate. The automated filter that rejects setups failing minimum criteria: R:R below 2:1, capital rule violations, insufficient conviction. Most ideas die here. You only see survivors.
GDP
Gross Domestic Product. The broadest economic measure. Sweden's GDP is export-dependent, Norway's is oil-linked, Finland's is manufacturing-driven, Denmark's is pharma and shipping. GDP surprises move currency and equity markets together.
H
Helsinki
Home of Nasdaq Helsinki and the OMXH25 index. Materials-heavy: UPM, Stora Enso, Nokia. Tied to Chinese pulp demand and EU industrial production. Helsinki mid-cap liquidity drops fast outside the top 10 names.
Hedge
A position that offsets risk in another. If you're long Swedish exporters, a short SEK position acts as a partial hedge. Hedging costs money but prevents blow-ups. Most retail traders skip hedging — and pay for it in currency drawdowns.
I
IPO
Initial Public Offering. A company's first public listing. Nordic IPOs tend to be smaller than US offerings. Wait 3-6 months after listing for price discovery before trading — the first quarterly report often resets expectations.
J
Journal
Trading journal. One sentence after every session: what you expect tomorrow, and what proves you wrong. Disciplined journaling outlasts any single indicator.
L
Limit Order
An order to buy or sell at a specific price or better. Use limit orders on Nordic small caps and during the closing auction. Market orders on thin names can produce surprising fills.
Livermore
Jesse Livermore's philosophy: wait for pivotal points. The market must confirm before capital is committed. One of NordTraders's four council masters.
Leverage
Borrowed capital to amplify returns. 5x leverage on a 100K account means a 2% price move becomes a 10% account move. CFD leverage is common in Nordics. NordTraders recommends paper trading without leverage for your first six months.
Liquidity
How easily an asset can be bought or sold without moving price. OMXC25 and OMXS30 names are liquid. First North names are not. If your position is a visible fraction of daily volume, expect slippage on entry and exit.
Long
Buying with the expectation of price increase. Going long a breakout in Atlas Copco is a classic Darvas setup. The default direction for most traders — but the best trades come from discipline, not direction.
M
Markdown
Wyckoff's fourth phase: price breaks below the distribution range and trends down. Volume confirms. Stay out. Short only if structure and R:R align.
Markup
Wyckoff's second phase: price breaks out of accumulation and trends up. Volume expands. This is where trend followers earn. Seykota and Darvas signals concentrate here.
MSI
Market Signal Intelligence. NordTraders's cross-market context panel showing conviction building across Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, and Helsinki. Check MSI before complaining about an empty Ideas tab.
MACD
Moving Average Convergence Divergence. A trend-following momentum indicator: signal line crossovers, histogram divergences. 12-26-9 is the standard setup. Works well on trending Nordic large caps. Lags in choppy markets — wait for trend confirmation.
Margin
Borrowed funds from your broker. Margin amplifies gains AND losses. In Norway, margin rates are tied to Norges Bank policy. If your broker calls during a downturn, you close at the worst time. Conservative sizing eliminates margin call risk.
Market Cap
Share price multiplied by shares outstanding. Nordic large caps: $10B+. Mid caps: $1-10B. Small caps: under $1B. Liquidity thresholds map to market cap tiers. Trade size to market cap — smaller companies, smaller positions.
Market Order
An order to buy or sell immediately at the best available price. Convenient but dangerous on illiquid names — your fill can be far from the quoted price. Use limit orders on Nordic small caps and during opening/closing auctions.
Momentum
The rate of price change. Strong momentum = trend is accelerating. Weakening momentum = trend may be exhausting. Combine RSI and MACD for momentum confirmation. Divergence between price and momentum is an early warning signal.
N
NOK
Norwegian Krone. Floats freely. Tightly correlated with Brent crude: oil up, NOK up. Norges Bank is the most hawkish Nordic central bank. NOK is structurally undervalued vs SEK on PPP basis.
Nasdaq Nordic
The exchange group operating Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Iceland exchanges. Not to be confused with US Nasdaq. Unified trading platform (INET) but separate rulebooks per country. Public holidays differ — check the calendar per exchange.
NAV
Net Asset Value. For holding companies like Investor AB, NAV is the value of underlying portfolio minus debt. Investor AB often trades at a discount to NAV. When the discount widens, value investors buy. When it narrows, they sell.
Norges Bank
Norway's central bank. The most hawkish in the Nordics. Manages the world's largest sovereign wealth fund (the Oil Fund). Norges Bank rate decisions move NOK — and therefore every Norwegian exporter's competitive position.
O
OMXC25
The OMX Copenhagen 25 index. The 25 most traded Danish stocks. Healthcare-heavy. Novo Nordisk dominates. Use for Danish market context at the start of every session.
OMXH25
The OMX Helsinki 25 index. Finnish benchmark. Materials and telecom. Nokia, UPM, Stora Enso are the largest weights. Most exposed to EU industrial cycle.
OMXS30
The OMX Stockholm 30 index. Swedish benchmark. Industrial-heavy: Volvo, Atlas Copco, Sandvik. The best Nordic index for Darvas strategies — clean trends, months-long moves.
OSEBX
The Oslo Børs Benchmark Index. Norwegian benchmark. Energy-heavy: Equinor alone can swing the index. Oil price is the single largest driver. Seafood and shipping round out the top weights.
Oscillator
A technical indicator that moves between two extremes. RSI, Stochastic, MACD histogram are oscillators. They work best in range-bound markets. In strong trends, oscillators can stay overbought or oversold for weeks — don't fade them.
P
Pivotal Point
Livermore's term for a price level where the market must prove itself. Do not anticipate the breakout — let the market confirm. The pivot is where patience meets execution.
PMI
Purchasing Managers' Index. A leading indicator of manufacturing activity. Swedish industrials (Volvo, Atlas Copco, Sandvik) move on global PMI data. The most important macro print for OMXS30 traders.
ProPicks
NordTraders's preset scan packs: Darvas Box Breakout, Wyckoff Accumulation, Seykota Trend Continuation, Index Beater. Launched from your console with one click.
P/E Ratio
Price-to-Earnings ratio. Share price divided by earnings per share. A high P/E means high growth expectations. Novo Nordisk trades at a premium P/E for pharma. Value traps have low P/Es for a reason — check earnings trend, not just ratio.
Pullback
A temporary decline within an uptrend. Not a reversal. Nordic industrials pull back to the 50-day MA during healthy trends. This is often an entry opportunity if the trend structure is intact and volume confirms the resumption.
R
R:R
Risk/Reward ratio. The amount risked vs the potential reward. NordTraders filters for minimum 2:1 — risk 1 to make 2. Below 2:1, the pre-trade gate rejects the setup. Most retail traders accept worse ratios and bleed slowly.
Riksbank
Sweden's central bank. More dovish than the ECB and Norges Bank. SEK direction is heavily influenced by Riksbank rate path. When Riksbank cuts, SEK weakens — exporters benefit, importers suffer.
RSI
Relative Strength Index. 14-period momentum oscillator. Overbought above 70, oversold below 30. Standard settings work on Nordic large caps. Combine with trend — do not short an overbought RSI in a strong uptrend.
Resistance
A price level where selling overcomes buying. Previous highs, round numbers, and volume profile HVNs act as resistance. Breakout above resistance on high volume is bullish. Failed breakout (upthrust) is bearish.
Reversal
A change in trend direction. Not the same as a pullback. Reversals end the trend. Signs: lower highs after an uptrend, volume expanding on down days, momentum divergences. Early reversals look like pullbacks — wait for confirmation.
Risk-Free Rate
The theoretical return of a zero-risk investment. In the Nordics, this is the 10-year government bond yield. Swedish 10Y, Danish 10Y, and Norwegian 10Y set the baseline for equity valuation models and option pricing.
S
Saxo Bank
Danish investment bank and broker. NordTraders's supported broker partner. Connect Saxo Demo to practice routing. Production live book is rollout-gated.
SEK
Swedish Krona. Structurally weak vs USD and EUR. Riksbank is dovish, which keeps SEK under pressure. Weak SEK benefits Swedish exporters (Volvo, Atlas Copco, Ericsson) through translation effects.
Seykota
Ed Seykota's trend-following philosophy: "The trend is your only friend. Everything else is noise." One of NordTraders's four council masters. Looks for sustained directional moves with volume confirmation.
Sim Journal
NordTraders's paper trading journal. Simulate every idea before risking capital. Tracks R multiples, exposure, and P&L. The recommendation: sim your first five ideas, minimum.
SMA
Simple Moving Average. 50-period for trend direction, 200-period for regime context. Nordic large caps trend well — they tend to respect these levels more reliably than US names.
Spring
Wyckoff term: a false breakdown below support that quickly reverses. A trap for late sellers. A buy signal for Wyckoff traders when volume confirms. More reliable on Nordic names with lower participation.
Stockholm
Home of Nasdaq Stockholm and the OMXS30 index. The most industrially diverse Nordic exchange. Global manufacturing proxy. Best liquidity 09:00-11:00 CET.
Stop
The price where a trade thesis is wrong. Exit immediately. No averaging down. On every NordTraders card, the stop is pre-calculated based on structure. Respect it — the math does not care about your feelings.
Scalping
Ultra-short-term trading: seconds to minutes. Requires tight spreads and high liquidity. Scandinavian large caps can support scalping during the first two hours. Small caps cannot — spreads and slippage destroy scalping edge.
Short Selling
Borrowing shares to sell, hoping to buy back cheaper. EU Short Selling Regulation applies to Nordic stocks. Thresholds, reporting requirements, and bans during volatility. Never short without checking the short-selling register and borrow availability.
Slippage
The difference between expected trade price and actual fill. Wide spreads, low liquidity, and market orders cause slippage. On a 10,000 position, 0.5% slippage is 50 gone before the trade starts. Trade liquid names to minimize it.
Support
A price level where buying overcomes selling. Previous lows, moving averages, and volume profile HVNs act as support. Breakdown below support on high volume is bearish. False breakdown (spring) is a Wyckoff buy signal.
Swing Trading
Holding positions for days to weeks, capturing one directional swing. The sweet spot for Nordic equities — long enough to ride trends, short enough to avoid earnings risk. Most NordTraders setups target swing timeframes.
T
Target
The first profit objective. Scaled out partially or closed fully — your call. Pre-calculated on every NordTraders card. The target is a level, not a guarantee.
Trend Following
Buy when price is rising, sell when it stops. The simplest strategy, the hardest to execute. Psychological discipline is the difference. Seykota and Darvas are trend followers. Most traders abandon it too early.
Trailing Stop
A stop that moves with price in your favor. Lock in gains while giving the trade room to run. Set trailing stops at ATR multiples (2x ATR is common). Too tight and you exit on noise. Too wide and you give back profit.
U
Upthrust
Wyckoff term: a false breakout above resistance that reverses. A trap for late buyers. A sell signal for Wyckoff traders when volume confirms.
V
Volatility
The magnitude of price movement. Measured by ATR, Bollinger Band width, or standard deviation. Nordic energy names are more volatile than Nordic banks. Adjust position size for volatility — wider stops demand smaller positions.
Volume
The number of shares traded in a period. Volume confirms price moves. A breakout on low volume is suspicious — smart money is not participating. A reversal on high volume is meaningful. Always check volume before committing capital.
VWAP
Volume-Weighted Average Price. The average price weighted by volume for the session. Institutions benchmark against VWAP. Price above VWAP = bullish intraday bias. Price below VWAP = bearish. VWAP acts as intraday support and resistance.
W
Wyckoff
Richard Wyckoff's methodology for reading smart money footprints in price and volume. Four phases: accumulation, markup, distribution, markdown. One of NordTraders's four council masters. Excels on Norwegian energy stocks where oil cycles create textbook structures.
Whipsaw
A false signal: price breaks a level, triggers entry, then immediately reverses. Common in choppy, low-volume markets. The only defense: wider stops, smaller size, or sitting out. A scanner that says "no" during whipsaw regimes saves capital.
Y
Yield
Income return on investment, usually from dividends. Nordic banks yield 4-7%. Don't chase yield alone — high yields sometimes signal dividend cuts ahead. Sustainable yield requires stable or growing earnings and a reasonable payout ratio.
