How to Buy Nordic Stocks

International investors are paying more attention to Nordic equities. Strong governance, reliable dividends, and global companies make the region worth a look. Here is how to access these markets.

Brokers

Nordic brokers (best access)

  • Nordnet works across Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. Best retail option.
  • Avanza is Sweden only. Largest Swedish retail broker.
  • Saxo Bank is Denmark based, available internationally, full exchange access.
  • Danske Bank, Nordea, and SEB need local bank accounts.

International brokers

  • Interactive Brokers has all four Nordic exchanges. Lowest commissions.
  • Degiro covers all Nordic exchanges with low fees.
  • eToro has limited Nordic selection, mostly large caps as CFDs.

Currency

Each country uses its own currency:

  • Sweden: SEK
  • Denmark: DKK (pegged to EUR)
  • Norway: NOK
  • Finland: EUR

Currency conversion costs 0.5 to 2 percent at most brokers unless you hold multi currency accounts. Interactive Brokers charges near spot rate.

The exchanges

Nasdaq Stockholm. Biggest Nordic exchange. Over 300 companies. Volvo, Ericsson, Atlas Copco and Spotify (NYSE listed though).

Nasdaq Copenhagen. Midsize. Heavy pharma. Novo Nordisk alone is about 60 percent of OMXC25. Maersk in shipping. Ørsted and Vestas in renewables.

Oslo Børs. Heavy energy. Equinor dominates. Mowi and SalMar in salmon farming. NOK moves with oil prices.

Nasdaq Helsinki. Smallest. KONE, Wärtsilä in engineering. UPM, Stora Enso in forestry. Nokia, Elisa in telecom.

Tax

Capital gains tax usually falls on your country of residence, not the Nordic country. Dividends are withheld at source at 15 to 30 percent. Tax treaties reduce this. You can reclaim if over withheld. Sweden and Finland charge small transaction taxes.

Getting started

  1. Open an Interactive Brokers or Saxo account
  2. Fund it and convert to the local currency
  3. Start with OMXS30 or OMXC25 large caps for the best liquidity
  4. Use limit orders. Market orders on mid caps can surprise you
  5. Run a scanner to find setups across exchanges instead of hunting manually
