OMX Copenhagen Trading Hours and Calendar Guide
The Copenhagen Stock Exchange (Nasdaq Copenhagen) is the primary securities exchange in Denmark. It operates on Central European Time and follows standard European trading hours, with a few quirks Nordic traders should know.
Regular trading hours
The main trading session runs:
- Opening auction: 09:00 to 09:05 CET
- Continuous trading: 09:05 to 16:55 CET
- Closing auction: 16:55 to 17:00 CET
The exchange is open Monday through Friday. It closes on Danish public holidays. There is no lunch break. Trading is continuous from the opening auction through the close.
Pre market and post market
Nasdaq Copenhagen does not offer a public pre market or after hours session for retail traders. Institutional crossing networks exist but are not accessible through standard retail brokers.
If you place an order outside of regular hours, it will queue for the next opening auction.
Danish public holidays (exchange closed)
The exchange closes on these days:
- New Year's Day (January 1)
- Maundy Thursday
- Good Friday
- Easter Monday
- General Prayer Day (Store Bededag: fourth Friday after Easter)
- Ascension Day
- Whit Monday
- Constitution Day (June 5: half day, closes at 13:00)
- Christmas Eve (December 24)
- Christmas Day (December 25)
- Boxing Day (December 26)
- New Year's Eve (December 31)
Constitution Day is the one to watch: a half day that catches many international traders off guard. Liquidity drops sharply after midday.
Overlap with other Nordic exchanges
The Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Helsinki exchanges all operate on CET/CEST and share similar hours. Oslo also follows CET. The entire Nordic region trades simultaneously. No timezone fragmentation.
The best liquidity in Copenhagen is during the first two hours (09:00 to 11:00 CET), which overlaps with London. Volume typically declines after 15:00 CET when US pre market activity begins drawing attention away from European names.
Earnings season
Danish companies report quarterly. The peak periods:
- Q4/FY: January to February (heaviest period)
- Q1: April
- Q2/H1: July to August (many Danes on holiday, thinner liquidity)
- Q3: October
Novo Nordisk, as the largest OMXC25 constituent, moves the entire index on earnings day. If you hold other Danish names during Novo's report, expect correlation.
Best times to trade
For swing traders on daily charts, the exact hour does not matter. For intraday traders:
- 09:05 to 11:00 CET: Highest volume, tightest spreads
- 11:00 to 14:00 CET: Steady but slower
- 14:00 to 16:00 CET: US overlap, some activity on export heavy names
- 16:30 to 17:00 CET: Closing auction, avoid market orders
