OMXS30: Sweden's Stock Index
The OMX Stockholm 30 is Sweden's blue chip index. It tracks the 30 most traded stocks on Nasdaq Stockholm. For anyone trading Swedish equities, this is the benchmark that matters.
What is in it
The index is market cap weighted and reviewed twice a year. The biggest names:
- Atlas Copco (industrials)
- Investor AB (holding company)
- Volvo (trucks, construction)
- Ericsson (telecom)
- H and M (retail)
- Handelsbanken, Swedbank, SEB (banking)
- Sandvik, SKF, Alfa Laval (engineering)
- Essity, AstraZeneca (healthcare)
Trading hours
Nasdaq Stockholm runs 09:00 to 17:30 CET. The opening auction is 09:00 to 09:05. Continuous trading goes until 17:25, then a closing auction to 17:30.
Sector mix
Sweden leans industrial. About 35 percent of the index is engineering and manufacturing. Banks are another 25 percent. Consumer, healthcare, and tech fill the rest. There is no giant tech stock dominating the way Apple or Microsoft dominate US indices. The index is genuinely spread across sectors.
How to trade it
You can trade OMXS30 futures and options on Nasdaq Stockholm. Mini futures work for smaller accounts.
For ETFs, XACT OMXS30 trades in SEK. International investors can use the UCITS version.
The index moves more with European markets than US ones. SEK direction also matters. A weak krona helps exporters like Volvo and Atlas Copco. A strong krona hurts them.
Events that move it
- Riksbank rate decisions (6 per year)
- Monthly inflation prints
- Quarterly GDP
- Earnings season peaks in January, April, July, October
Using it in your trading
Check the OMXS30 trend before trading Swedish stocks. When the index is above its 50 day moving average, Swedish names get a tailwind. When it is below, be more selective. Simple context, but most traders skip it.
