Stockholm Stock Exchange Guide

Nasdaq Stockholm is the largest securities exchange in the Nordic region. Over 300 companies. Market cap above 800 billion euro. If you trade Swedish stocks, this is your venue.

History and structure

Founded in 1863. Bought by OMX in 1998, then Nasdaq in 2008. It now runs as Nasdaq Stockholm under the Nasdaq Nordic group, sharing the INET trading system with Copenhagen, Helsinki, and Iceland.

Trading hours (CET)

Pre opening runs 0800 to 0900. Orders go in but nothing matches yet. The opening auction runs 0900 to 0905 to find the equilibrium price. Continuous trading from 0905 to 1725. Closing auction 1725 to 1730. Post trading until 1800.

Best liquidity is 0905 to 1100 CET when London is also open.

Market segments

The Main Market has three tiers by market cap. Large Cap is over 1 billion euro with over 100 companies including Volvo, Ericsson, Atlas Copco, H and M, and Investor AB. Mid Cap is 150 million to 1 billion euro. Small Cap is under 150 million.

First North is the growth market with lighter listing rules and higher risk. Nordic SME is the smallest segment for micro caps. Most retail traders should stay on the Main Market.

Key indices

OMXS30 is the blue chip benchmark of the 30 most traded names. OMXSPI covers all Main Market stocks. Sector indices split it into industrials, financials, healthcare, and more. OMXS30 ESG screens constituents for sustainability criteria.

Major companies

Atlas Copco is about 11 percent of OMXS30. Investor AB about 9 percent. Volvo about 8 percent. Ericsson 6 percent. H and M, Handelsbanken, Swedbank, SEB, Sandvik, and Essity round out the top ten.

Trading

Swedish stocks trade in SEK. International brokers convert at their rate. Interactive Brokers offers near spot rates. SEK has been structurally weak versus USD and EUR, which gives dollar investors a tailwind in uptrends and a headwind in downtrends.

How to start

Open an Interactive Brokers or Saxo account. Convert to SEK. Begin with OMXS30 large caps for the best fills. Use limit orders. Watch Riksbank decisions because SEK moves sharply on rate surprises. Check the index trend before trading individual names.
