ADX does not tell you which way the trend is going. It tells you whether a trend exists at all. That is more useful than most people realize.

Most indicators are direction-first. RSI says overbought or oversold. MACD says bullish or bearish cross. ADX says none of that. It is a trend strength meter, and on Nordic large caps where trends run clean and long, it filters out a lot of bad trades.

What the Numbers Mean

ADX runs from 0 to 100. Below 20, the stock is ranging. Between 20 and 25 is borderline. Above 25, a trend is present. Above 40, the trend is strong and usually sustainable. Above 60, the move is parabolic and reversal risk climbs fast.

The default setting is 14 periods on a daily chart. Twelve is more responsive and catches trends a bar or two earlier. Twenty is smoother and produces fewer signals. Stick with 14 unless you have a reason to change it.

The DMI lines paint the picture. A rising ADX with DMI+ above DMI- means a strong uptrend. A rising ADX with DMI- above DMI+ means a strong downtrend. A falling ADX means whichever trend was dominating is losing steam.

How to Use It

Two setups that work consistently on liquid Nordic names.

The first is the ADX breakout. ADX has been below 20 for several weeks, meaning the stock has been sleeping. Then ADX crosses above 25, DMI+ crosses above DMI-, and price breaks above a clear level. That is a trend initiation signal. Enter on the break, stop below the range low.

The second is the ADX trend continuation. ADX is already above 30 and rising. Price pulls back to the 20 period moving average but does not close below it. ADX stays elevated. DMI+ stays above DMI-. That pullback is a gift, not a reversal.

Where It Fails

ADX works terribly in rangebound markets, but that is the point. When ADX is below 20, it is telling you not to trade. Most traders ignore that message and lose money in chop. The indicator works best when you use it to say no.

ADX also lags. It confirms a trend after it has already started. By the time ADX crosses 25, the easy money might be gone. That is fine. Trend following is not about catching the exact bottom. It is about catching the middle of a move that has room to run.

On Danish names, ADX spends more time below 25 because OMXC25 stocks range more than they trend. That tells you something about the market structure. On Swedish names, ADX trends above 25 for longer stretches. Use the indicator to match your universe to your strategy, not the other way around.
