VWAP is the average price a stock has traded at throughout the day, weighted by volume. Institutions care about it because they are measured against it. If a fund buys below VWAP, they had a good day. Above it, they overpaid.

Retail traders do not have a benchmark to beat. But VWAP still matters because it acts as a magnet. Price gravitates toward it, especially in the afternoon when volume thins.

How VWAP Works

VWAP resets every day. It starts fresh at the opening auction and accumulates throughout the session. The line is most reliable after the first hour of trading, once enough volume has built up to anchor it.

Above VWAP means the average participant is in profit. Below means they are underwater. Neither is inherently bullish or bearish, but the reaction at VWAP tells you something about the session's character.

The Basic Setup

In a strong uptrend, price stays above VWAP all day. Dip buyers step in at VWAP repeatedly. The first touch of VWAP after a morning rally is a buy signal if the broader market is green and the stock is above its open.

In a downtrend, VWAP acts as resistance. Bounces to VWAP get sold. The first touch of VWAP from below in a weak tape is a short signal.

In a choppy session, price crosses VWAP repeatedly and the signal degrades. If price has crossed VWAP four times by lunch, the fifth cross is not edge. It is noise.

Nordic Specifics

OMXS30 and OMXH25 names trade enough volume for VWAP to be meaningful by about 10:30 CET. Smaller names and some OMXC25 stocks take longer. If a stock trades only a few thousand shares by midday, the VWAP is anchored by a handful of prints and is not reliable.

The best VWAP trades on Nordic names happen when a stock gaps up on earnings or a broker upgrade and then pulls back to VWAP within the first two hours. The gap shows institutional interest. The pullback to VWAP is the market offering you the same price the big accounts paid on average.

What VWAP Cannot Do

VWAP cannot tell you where price is going. It tells you where fair value sits right now, given the volume so far. Use it as a level, not a forecast. Combine it with a trend filter or a support zone and it becomes useful. Trade it in isolation and it is just a squiggly line.

If the scanner flags a name with a clean structure and price is testing VWAP from above in a bull tape, that is a setup worth looking at. The combination of a filtered signal and a VWAP entry gives you two independent reasons to be in the trade.
